It’s been a while…

It’s been two years since my last post! Time truly does fly, and I feel like with each passing year it just gains speed. I read a comment on my last post this morning that said “I wish you would post more often” and then I checked the date of my that post and it was December 2018… And then I felt a little guilty. Apart from time getting away from me, I do have another reason for not posting. I spent the last year working on cruise ships and while I have a LOT of stories I have been a bit wary of posting any of them. It’s an American company and you know how they roll; one wrong word and you end up with a lawsuit. But I do have a few posts waiting to publish so watch this space.

For now, I can say that it has been an incredible experience. I have met so many amazing people, seen beautiful places, started learning a new language and had the chance to practice medicine in a very different setting to the one I am used to. The experience has also been filled with some of my most trying times, or as I like to call them opportunities for growth. I had to have emergency surgery in Mexico, got stuck onboard for 3 months in the midst of Spain’s coronavirus lockdown, had my heart broken and broke a heart myself (it was a mutual heart-breaking). But grow I did, and am still doing. And trying times also bring with them a few stories. Another space to watch.

Thanks to our friend, Rona, I am currently practicing medicine on land again. I am working at the Brackengate Intermediate Care Facility for COVID-19 patients. It is an old warehouse turned 336 bed hospital. I have a four month contract with the Department of Health and I am excited. I’m excited to be a “real doctor” (another story to be told) again, and to get back into the South African medical world. I’ve only been working for a few days and I already feel like I have learnt a huge amount. Coronavirus is not a joke, its a monster of a virus, and I feel so privileged to be able to stand next to my fellow South African colleagues in this battle. That sounds corny but it really is a battle. While I was quarantined in Spain I was watching the developments here and I felt so helpless. I just wanted to come home and get my hands dirty – and them wash them afterwards of course. I am excited to finally be able to do that. And… I’m sure it will bring me plenty to write about!

So this post is short and sweet – just a little update and a promise that I have a lot of stories on the way…
